tomar environmental monitoring offices.

the tomar environmental monitoring offices by embaixada arquitectura.

"Despite its biscuit-dry title, this is a sparkling refurbishment of a former factory. After Embaixada Arquitectura were commissioned to create a new exhibition space in the Portuguese city of Tomar, the Lisbon-based practice took the existing building back to a shell, then infilled it with a series of angular constructions.
The EMIO is a combination of public arts centre, lecture space and apartment for an artist-in-residence, with a few administrative offices tucked off to one side. These new functions are raised up off the ground floor, forming a miniature cityscape of roofs, pathways and public squares, enhanced by the dark, rich surface textures that stand out starkly against the whitewashed walls of the original structure."
- thank you wallpaper.

this project is sublime.

ratatat.

here are some collages from the ratatat website.
i think one of the guys in the band does them. it's basically a 50 50 chance it's one or the other (two guys, you see). i have a suspicion it might be the one with the long hair. at one show they had projections that were like these collages but animated- all those teardrop shapes and eyeball shapes floating around. i couldn't find them on youtube though.
and here is the link to their volume two mixtape.

UPDATE: they were done by Evan Mast, the one with the shorter hair, who plays the bass. - THANKS, ANON.

knut hamsun.

this is the knut hamsun center by steven holl, but y'all already knew that. it's a fairly old project, so it was surprising to see the date of the project as 2009.
also, this is an amazing model/sketch combo. this is probably that one key building that made me want to be an architect.

here is a great site. you can see all the nice things obama has done for you.
i wish i knew who was behind this; it's just too clever.
here is just one thing he did for me lately:

snow box.

i presented my second installation on wednesday for my installation seminar.
i called it "snow box".
snow box is a box based on the voting booth typology, but filled with sugar. it was accompanied by a recording of crunching snow under my boots (about 9 minutes in duration), a pile of industrial paper towels, and a file folder containing certain actions i wanted the class to execute.
i had this picture of a snowscape in my head- just a snapshot, and i dissected the scene into different miniature scenes.

excerpts from the text:
step 6. "snow drifts".
"hi

sit
relax for a second
enjoy the beautiful snowscape in front of you
now take a handful of snow and let it run through your fingers
there are two lines in the snow
these are the shallow creek and the road
on the side of the road pinch the snow together
to make snow drifts
(small sand dunes)"

step 9. "plateau".
"hi

sit
relax for a second
enjoy the beautiful snowscape in front of you
now take a handful of snow and let it run through your fingers
there are two hills in front of you
one might be a plateau
you know that you can make one that's a little bigger than the biggest one
push some snow up against the side of the world
a tiny bit taller than the biggest hill
you did it
you are king of the mountain".

there were 13 steps in all. and because just one step was written on each page, no one had any idea that this was a collaborative effort. they were under the impression that they were just making a bear den or a snow-covered taurus on the side of a road.

friederike von rauch.

"Friederike von Rauch (b. 1967) seeks out special places and buildings, which in her photographs seem at once strange and familiar. These spaces have to be empty, because that is when, to her, their beauty is best appreciated. The lack of a human presence deprives the buildings of their functionality. The buildings in her photographs are no longer buildings, but monumental sculptures."- from her bio at gallery 51.

indian architects.

joban desai and associates are from india.
they make bizarre fantasy villas and stucco highrises. their models often incorporate toy cars and toy people.
their motto is "CONVERT INDIA INTO NEW INDIA"-strong, bold, assertive, uncompromising.
and, most importantly listed as peons on their staff are harish chaudhari and shashikant rathod.
when i'm an architect i will have peons on my staff.
also, these models are great.

sinking ships.

"13 sinking ships" by juliet haysom.

i had this idea, for a book of sinking ships, but it seems like it's already been done. juliet haysom made a book called 13 sinking ships, and made some other books and installations that seem pretty interesting.

here's one called "20 submarines".

and "book of horizons".

this on under here isn't ms haysom. it's gerhard richter again. i was reading a book about him the other day and found this painting "the stag". isn't it beautiful?

saturday drive.

i went on a little country drive yesterday with warren and ian and graham. we drove in ian's plymouth acclaim out in the countryside south of lexington. usually we go north of lexington, towards paris or georgetown, so we decided to switch it up a little bit. it was a beautiful day. maybe the first beautiful day we've had all year, fifty degrees and sunny. we usually listen to the walkmen, but when ian was in new orleans someone stole his car stereo and now he has a boombox. we listened to dr. dre's 2001 instead. we drove and drove, and i took pictures of barns and we all hatched elaborate plans and ate warren's cheese sticks because he got too many of them at arby's.
we were trying to find versailles, but that didn't happen. we found mundy's landing instead. i think it was on the kentucky river. there was a huge white mansion and i found a dog skull with all its teeth. warren wanted a tooth, but there was still gums and stuff on the teeth and ian was like "that is not going in the acclaim". no teeth were taken. i took a picture of the skull but it was too grody to put on here. after we went to mundy's landing we turned around and went to a country store and bought some candy and cream soda. i found some candy there called an "aero bar" that stephania brought me from canada over christmas break. it's a chocolate bar with tons of air pockets in the inside, and it deflates as it melts in your mouth. it's delicious. the owner of the store said he imported them from ireland.
after we went to the store we drove to the mall, where we walked around and bought matching black bubble coats at the gap for fifteen dollars so we can be a gang. these things are huge.
here are a lot of stills from videos from the drive.

willy de sauter.

over the past week or so i've been working on my portfolio to send to grad school, so i haven't had a lot of time for making, just time for re-arranging. hence all the links to other people's things.
and then you might say "caleb, but you have enough time to goof around on the internet".
well this is willy de sauter.
