well it was my dad's 50th birthday today, so we went up to huber's in indiana to have a festive meal.
it was very cloudy and cold outside and it sure doesn't feel like it's almost april.

new museum.

a proposal for the new museum by my old professor mike mckay.
when i was in new orleans, the whole studio had to share one bathroom, which was upstairs where mike and his wife liz lived. i would see this model on my way to the bathroom, sitting on a shelf with slverware and big bags of salt and sugar. i would also see it when i left the bathroom, so that amounts to seeing it at least two times a day. after a while i think they started getting mad at everyone using their bathroom, so i would go outside to the old abandoned metal foundry. but hey, i'd get annoyed at like fifteen kids using my bathroom everyday too.
here's the link to mike's site, which has some nice collages and paintings too. i smell a theme cooking up- "people i've tried to copy at least once".
also, don't forget to check out the knoa site- my old alma mater.
marcel.
photographs of the lecture hall wing at the archives of american art (some of the photos have watermarks). probably one of the most beautiful buildings i've never seen in real life. the archives are an amazing resource- pictures and working documents of lots (if not all) of marcel breuer's projects.

bonus! the facade of the technology building. remember the good old days when blobs were boogers? i do.

white and lime (chair day).
"by the pool lenestol med fotskammel - til bruk ute eller inne."
by arne quinze for quinze & milan.
i think this chair is called "by the pool". i don't know if those other words are part of the title too. (i don't know any other languages).
correction-
"the text for the first chair is in norwegian and says "'By the pool' armchair with footrest – for indoors and outdoors"- thanks alexander.

and this one's great.
"glide" by monica forster. kind of like a squashed paulistano chair.

form us with love's "highway chair".

new walkmen songs.
some new songs, with the links in blue:
i lost you (mp3)
ride down the highway (mp3)
red moon (mp3)
what happened to you (mp3)
another song (today or tomorrow?)
they're all really great (i lost you is my fave).
i met mr leithauser, the singer, in savannah a couple days ago, and i asked him this question i've been wondering about: "so when's the new one coming out?" and he said "we're working on our last song right now". and that was about the extent of our conversation.

installation 3 (dubai).
we had our third installation due today. this one was supposed to be about "the cliche of the multiple". i might sound a little like holden caufield right now, but people sound phony when they put the word "the" in front of words- "the" enigmatic, "the" kitsch, "the" poetic, etc.
my project dealt with instant cities (dubai is the first one that comes to mind).
the audience was given materials- two sizes of foam strips, toothpicks, and the title of architect. they were told to make a building out of the strips and stake their claim to a spot along the main street, a line i made with my finger through sand. the site was a linear arrangement of three boxes filled with something like a thousand pounds of sand (industrial grade on the bottom and play sand on the top).
three interesting things came out of this:
1) given strips, the majority of the architects developed towers. only one person made a horizontal structure.
2) during the making of the towers, almost no one talked to each other.
3) all of the buildings looked like recent OMA proposals (hyper-city?).

beaches.
we went to tybee island and spent the night there last night. the tops of my feet are bright red and i have the shape of africa on my back about the same color as my feet (where my arms don't reach). i finished one book and started another. very productive.

p.s.
in the background of the picture with the helicopter is a destroyer. i had never seen one in real life before.

amze emmons.
i tried to copy amze emmons ALL THE TIME in high school.
mr emmons deals with refugee architecture (inflatable spaces, shipping containers) and empty modern spaces (airports, seaports).

falling sand.

when i was a kid i would spend hours on the beach making dams out of sand to catch the water as the tide went out. the dams would fall apart, and by the end i would spend most of my time repairing all the breaches in the walls instead of building new dams. this game is kind of like that. you use the cursor to draw walls to catch the falling oil, water, sand, and salt, and you can make plants grow or use fire to burn stuff away.
there's also a tiny little sun in the bottom right hand corner, and when stuff falls on it it gets very ANGRY.
FIVE STARS.
